Hello STEM fans!
Related rate problems are one of the most common and difficult types of problems students face in their first calculus class. In this installment in our problem solving series Aaron tackles this type of problem and gives 4 simple steps for solving related rates:
1) Relate the unknown quantity to the known quantities
2) Solve the expression you wrote for the unknown quantity
3) Take the derivative of the expression (this is what relates the rates of the quantities)
4) Substitute in the known rate for the known quantity to find the unknown rate for the unknown quantity.
Put these steps together and you've got everything you need to solve related rate problems! Well, obviously it's a bit tougher in practice than theory, and the devil is in the details, so watch the video!
